Currently Senator Clinton is trailing in the race for delegates. So instead of focusing on things such as the war in Iraq, she decided to dedicate her time the Puerto Ricans. She has vowed to create more jobs within Puerto Rico by creating new tax benefits, as well as returning some of the land on the outlying island of Vieques. On other thing that she said she wants to do is advance plans that would allow the Puerto Rican people to decide whether they would like to remain a commonwealth, become a state, or gain its independence. This, however, could be a very bad thing because it is apparent that Puerto Rico is split on whether or not they want their independence or not. Will these political promises provide enough delegates for Senator Clinton to gain the nomination for the Democratic Party?
Senator Obama has also focused on Puerto Rican politics. In November of 2007, Senator Barack Obama met with Puerto Rico Governor Anibal Acevedo Vila in Puerto Rico. Governor Vila has endorsed Senator Obama for quite a while now. Out of the seven superdelegates in Puerto Rico, three are committed to Senator Clinton, two are committed to Senator Obama, and the remaining two are undecided. So come June 1, 2007, who will win the delegates of Puerto Rico? Senator Clinton or Senator Obama?

It does look like Puerto Rico will have a deciding factor in choosing whether Obama or Hilary is the Democrats nominee. They have switched to a primary system and now they have moved the date of that primary up to June 1st. In many elections a primary so late would have little impact on a party seeking its frontrunner for the general election. This voting season is different than many of the past. Since the date of Puerto Rico's primary is so late candidates will continue to try and seek support from the Puerto Rican voters. This can server to the interest of of the Puerto Rican people, by requesting favors and policy changes if that candidate was to be elected. It will be interesting to see which way Puerto Rico will sway to.
I hope for all our sake Puerto Rico decides of Obama. This post got me thinking about our class discussion when me talked about knowledge of presidential election practices. This relates to our text by talking about how much Puerto Ricans know about primaries. This is similar to the problem of little votes in high Latino populated comunities in California that we talked about. I think that in order for either of them to win Puerto Rico they need to educate Spanish speaking people on the practices of elections so they are more inclined to vote at all.
